Lying on the slope of a hill, on the shores of Lake Lugano , the villa consists of two volumes organized on different levels due to the particular topography of the site.
A polygonal shaped glass pavilion with rounded edges stands above a linear underground block. The living and dining room, the kitchen and storage spaces are located in the pavilion, while bedrooms, bathrooms and garage are in the lower level. Each level relates itself with independent outdoor spaces, which are closely related with the interiors.
The glass pavilion overlooks two very defined areas: the first, toward the mountain, is a very private zone resulted in the area between the property line and the building setback line according to the local building code. The second is a garden overlooking the lake. In the same way, the bedrooms face a garden enclosed by the building and the perimeter wall.
The ring, obtained between the perimeter wall above and the pavilion, amplifies the interior space, with seems much larger than what it actually is. The ring-like space, that embraces the building on the north side, grants constant ventilation and natural light to the living areas, also due to the white cladding of the perimeter wall and white gravel which reflect the sunlight coming from the south. A night-time artificial light scene is the ideal reverse field for the lake panorama.
All the additional functions of the pavilion are contained in a central lacquered wood block, which acts as a sort of a thick penetrable wall that separates the kitchen from the living room without dividing the space with doors, and in which are located the powder room, the kitchen, the stairs, bookcases, all mechanical systems and the technological and audio-video equipment.
Great attention is given to the environmental aspects, as the use of geothermal energy, roof gardens, the rain-water collection system, the choice of highly efficient low-emittance glass insulated with argon gas, to optimize the thermal efficiency of the shell and the use of natural sun shading as the placement of deciduous trees in the south-west area of the building.

REFURBISHMENT OF A LISTED TOWER APARTMENT The flat is located above the city of London, only a short walk from the financial district amidst a on first sight, rough concrete oasis - the listed Barbican Centre. There is no traffic, instead ponds, gardens and a distinguished cultural centre on the ground level, including a concert hall, theatres, art galleries and cinemas. The 100 m² flat on the 17th floor of the Shakespeare Tower with spectacular view over the roofs of the city shall be the new residence of our client and also serve as an exhibition space. When the client purchased the flat it looked as if it was frozen in time with yellowed carpeting and the original kitchenette, albeit seemingly run down. Nevertheless the flat had a well arranged floor plan, although the corridor, kitchen and bathroom were located towards the inside of the building and therefore appeared dark and small. A Loggia stretches all around the flat. On the east side in front of the kitchen window it forms a terrace which offers unobstructed views over the skyline. From breakfast with the sunrise to an evening sunset it is only a few steps along the balcony. The flat shall become more flexible and spacious while maintaining the historic floor plan. Space for the display of contemporary art shall also be offered. The panoramic view must be visible from all corners of the flat. In order to achieve a greater lightness, the wall between the corridor and bedrooms was replaced by translucent sliding panels. Living rooms are completely coloured in white to underline their spaciousness and to form a minimalistic background for the art collection. In harsh contrast to this, the walls of the internal spaces of the corridor, bathroom and kitchen are coated with a smooth shimmering black cement finish. The dark finish allows small rooms to work larger and adds an elegance with the contrast to the white fixtures. The structure of the flat with its three layers becomes visible: the outside loggia, the white living rooms and the bathroom and kitchen completely wrapped in black. The solid wall between the bathroom and corridor was also removed and replaced by translucent sliding doors. When open, the owner can enjoy the panoramic view while soaking in the bathtub. If the balcony doors are also open, the gentle rumble of the metropolis can also be heard. The Barbican Estate was built between 1965 and 1976, on a site that was bombed in World War II.The complex was designed by the architects Chamberlin, Powell and Bon. The estate was officially opened in 1969 and is now home to around 4,000 people living in 2,014 flats. The flats reflect the widespread use in Britain in the 1960s and 1970s of concrete as the visible face of the building. "The intention underlying our design is to create a coherent residential precinct in which people can live both conveniently and with pleasure. Despite its high density the layout is spacious: the buildings and the space between them are composed in such a way as to create a clear sense of order without monotony. Uninterrupted by road traffic (which is kept separate from pedestrian circulation through and about the neighbourhood) a quiet precinct will be created in which people will be able to move about freely enjoying constantly changing perspectives or terraces, lawns, trees and flowers seen against the background or the new buildings or reflected in the ornamental lake." Uma livraria como um espaço de encontro. Foi essa a principal premissa do projeto arquitetônico da Livraria Cultura do Iguatemi. Mais do que apenas um lugar de compras, a loja é convidativa para a permanência e convivência. Assim buscamos que os visitantes não apenas entrem na livraria, mas fiquem por lá. A entrada é feita por uma porta de 7,7m, na qual os caixilhos de alumínio e vidro são inteiramente recolhidos, deixando a passagem livre. Nesse piso, com dimensões mais intimistas, estão os produtos audiovisuais, como CDs e Blue Rays, e um café no jardim. Um jogo de escadas rolantes leva até o grande vão da livraria, perpassando um andar intermediário, que tem brinquedos e histórias em quadrinhos – o chamado Espaço Geek. Chega-se então ao andar superior onde há um grande salão, com poltronas e mesas, além de uma arquibancada de 21 metros de largura aberta para todo o vão. Convidativa para folhar um livro ou mesmo para abrigar pequenos concertos e palestras, essa estrutura conduz os visitantes para o mezanino aberto. Os livros envolvem o lugar, apoiados em onze grandes mesas dispostas ortogonalmente no salão e em estantes brancas na periferia. Essas prateleiras tem iluminação de led embutidas e formalizam a delimitação do espaço, como em cubo revestido internamente por livros. Uma sala multiuso, especialmente para conferências – que ganhou o nome de café filosófico –, uma sala para livros infantis e um jardim para crianças, completam o programa. O piso e o forro, assim como as mesas de display, são de madeira. Já os demais planos usam laminados brancos e distinguem as paredes laterais do resto. Guarda corpos de vidro minimizam a interferência visual desses elementos no espaço, desaparecendo no conjunto. A iluminação é feita por linhas de luminárias e completadas por pendentes no centro do salão superior. A configuração da planta da livraria, especialmente por meio de uma circulação aberta buscou a fluidez e continuidade espacial. O percurso arquitetônico se inicia em um espaço acolhedor, até chegar a um lugar monumental, vivo, onde ficam a maioria dos produtos e onde os visitantes podem interagir uns com outros, onde podem pegar um livro e ler um capítulo antes da compra, onde podem simplesmente descansar olhando o movimento. Pensamos que assim, como espaços convidativos e agradáveis que acabam por propiciar a sociabilização entre pessoas, são as livrarias no século XXI. O programa é a própria vivência da loja.
